Announcements

FOSTER CARE CLOSET - This morning we welcome Leigh Esau, founder of the Foster Care Closet.  The program provides free clothes for foster children.  Bring gently used clothes to the south wall of the sanctuary during September.  Clean items are needed: infant through teen sizes, dress and casual clothes, and shoes.  Baby items are also needed (blankets, etc.).  Remember that lots of teens are adult size!  If you have questions, please contact Carol Knieriem or Leigh Esau.

POTLUCK TODAY - Join us right after the worship service for fellowship and food.  There is always enough food, and everyone is invited to stay.

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP - Bowling and Bonfire with the youth group from Salem Mennonite Church in Shickley, will be here in Lincoln on Sunday, October 4.  Meet at Rick & Wanda Stauffer's at 1:30.  We will bowl at Parkway Lanes and then come back to Stauffer's for a bonfire.

ALL-CHURCH FALL PARTY - Mark your calendars now for a Church Fall Party next Sunday, September 27 from 4:00 to 8:00 at Chad and Kathy Boshart's house.  Details on the church door and in your mailbox.

ARE YOU IN OUR DIRECTORY? - The church directory will be published in October and we don't want to leave you out!  Please check the pages on the wall of the fellowship hall for your name, address, birthday, etc. and make any corrections.  If you don't see your name there, write it on the wall!

SMALL GROUPS - New and old small groups are starting soon.  Please contact Nurture Committee (Dallas, Julie, Gerry, David O., Brenda McLey) if you were not in a group last year but would like to be.

MEN'S NIGHT OUT - It's our First Annual FMC Game Feed.  Pheasant, Quail, Turkey, Goose, Bear, Deer, and Duck to be served on Wednesday, September the 30th, 6:30 p.m. at Rick's house.  Please RSVP to Rick or Brett by Sunday, September the 27th.  For all the non-red meat eaters, we will fry up some excellent fish.  Come and enjoy.

FUN LUNCH FOR WOMEN - Inviting all women 16 years and up to have a fun lunch at "Art Chicks" in Louisville on Saturday, October 10th.  Lunch will be at 11:30.  There is a sign up sheet and Becky Waegli needs to know who can go in the next couple of weeks so that she can give the owners a head count.

PRIMARY SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS - We will have a meeting and lunch after the morning worship service on Sunday, October 4.

MISSION STIMULUS PAYMENT II - In response to special needs during the current economic downturn, the Leadership Board has agreed to make a second above budget gift of $1,000 to People's City Mission and a $1,200 gift to Christian Peacemaker Teams to support one month of Jessica Frederick's work in At-Tuwani.  Her latest email report is posted on the bulletin board.

BIRTHDAY OFFERING - Our monthly Birthday and Anniversary offering will be held next Sunday.  Everyone born or married during September is invited to bring a gift to support our Global Family students in Calcutta, India as well as the work of Mennonite World Conference.  This year our commitment to each student has increased to $300 per year and our offerings have been falling a bit short of this goal.

HELP STOP HUNGER - It's CROP WALK time again, where neighbors from different faiths, cultures and ages walk together to take a stand against hunger in our world.  Lincoln's Crop Walk will take place on Sunday afternoon, October 11.  Pick up your donation forms from Anita Breckbill.  This year, if you are contributing to Mennonite Central Committee through CROP, please make out your checks to MCC, indicating CROP on the memo line.

ROOFING INFORMATION - Tom H. has decided that October 9th and 10th would work the best for him to have First Mennonite re-roof his house.  Nebraska plays football on the 8th so we would like to get started on Friday afternoon to start getting the shingles off and get the black paper back on.  It is a 20 square roof so it should be doable in a day and half with a good turnout.  Please let Wade or Dallas know so that we can coordinate numbers, for food and drink.

RELAY FOR LIFE EVENT - Do your holiday shopping and support cancer research, too.  Come to First Mennonite Church on Saturday, October 3, anytime from 10 to 4.  Booths will be set up from many vendors including Tupperware, Tastefully Simple and Tammy (Riedel's) crafts.  A portion of the proceeds goes to Relay For Life to support cancer research.  See church bulletin board for more details.

HESSTON COLLEGE - A Centennial Heritage Auction featuring historical items and works by alumni artists will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, Yost Center, as a part of Hesston's Centennial Homecoming Weekend. Alumni and friends of the college are invited to attend. Proceeds support the renovation of Erb Hall Dorm for students. For information see bulletin board or go to www.hesston.edu/centennial.

ANABAPTIST SEMINAR - Rev. Daniel L. Buttry, Global Consultant for Peace and Justice with International Ministries of the American Baptist Churches, will speak at First Mennonite Church next month.  Buttry is the author of Christian Peacemaking: from Heritage to Hope, which is being discussed by the elective Sunday school class.  Please save the dates.

Sunday, October 11

Steps Toward Win/Win Solutions - 9:30 a.m.

Overcoming Evil With Good: Romans 12:19-21 - 10:45 a.m.

The Bible and Conflict Transforming Initiatives - 7:00 p.m.

Wednesday, October 14

Mainstreams and Margins - Two Roles in Conflict - 7:00 p.m.

Combined adult Sunday school classes will meet on October 11.  Small groups are asked to come on October 14 in place of their regular meetings.

CAMPUS DISCUSSION GROUP - The UNL campus discussion group will meet each Tuesday at 9:00 p.m.  All college and university students are welcome.  Meet in the Nebraska Union near the Caffina Café.  This week the group will conclude the study of Habakkuk.

During the potluck immediately following worship everyone interested in the group is invited to meet at the reserved table in the fellowship hall to discuss forming a Registered Student Organization.
