SPEAKER TODAY - We welcome Gordon Brubacher, our special speaker this morning.  Gordon received his Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible and Ancient Near Eastern Studies from Drew University.  He has been a professor of Bible, Archeology, and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at Messiah College, Doane College, and the Tantur Ecumenical Institute in Jerusalem.  He is currently teaching at Creighton University.

PARENT-CHILD DEDICATION - Next Sunday there will be a dedication service for Britton Fast and Zachary Boyd and their parents.  If any parents are interested in a later child dedication service that will take place in the fall, please let David Orr know.

TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES - New opportunities are coming this fall for Sunday School teachers.  Be thinking about how you might help out.

LEARNING TOGETHER - The women of FMC will have the opportunity to study the Bible together this fall.  We will meet on Saturday mornings at 6:30 a.m. at church beginning September 12.  The 12-week study will follow Beth Moore's video series, "Believing in God".  All women are welcome!  Please let Barb or Wanda know soon if you can come so that they can order you a book.

LETTER TO FIRST MENNONITE CHURCH:

Hello Church Family,

I have been offered the opportunity to participate a peace workshop this August.

I am looking forward to sharing what I have learned from this experience here and in Canada, where I go to University.  I am already scheduled to speak at First Mennonite the first Sunday I am back, and am excited to see what that initiates.

If you are interested in hearing more or possibly helping with finances for the trip, I have a letter with more information. I will be in the lobby after the service. Thank you for your support!

Peace,

Sara Brubacher

TOO BUSY TO COME TO A RETREAT? - Then this is the retreat for you!  Women's Retreat at Swan Lake Christian Camp, Viborg, South Dakota on September 19-20, 2009.  Andrea Wall will help us to spend time reflecting on our busy lives and addressing the question, "God is not in a hurry...so why are we all the time?"  This will be a weekend where you can put on the brakes, take a much needed rest, be offered permission to consider slowing down and to discover pathways to the abundant life that God is offering you.  For a schedule of the weekend, check the registration form and poster that was sent to our church.  Cost: $55.

HOLMES LAKE LANTERN FLOAT TODAY - The Annual Hiroshima-Nagasaki Commemoration and Lantern Float at Holmes Lake commemorates President Truman's August 2, 1945, decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. It also looks forward to recently promised agreements to reduce the number of nuclear weapons in the world and examines the threat that STRATCOM may pose to nuclear peace.  The event will include statements from the victims of the bomb, the construction of the Japanese lanterns for the float, traditional instrument music, clerical statements, poetry and more.  The event will begin at 6:30 P.M. with the making of the lanterns, the formal program will begin at 7 P.M., and the floating of the lanterns on the lake will come when darkness comes, about 9 P.M.  Materials for the lanterns will be provided.  First Mennonite Church is a co-sponsor.

BIRTHDAY OFFERING NEXT WEEK - We will celebrate all the August birthdays and anniversaries next Sunday with a special offering during the worship service.  All the money is used to help with the education of three Indian students.  You are invited to contribute if your celebration is in August.
